From The Monterey News, January 2023, Vol. LIII Number 1
The first annual Berkshire Pond Hockey Classic will take place on Saturday, January 28, bringing classic outdoor hockey to Lake Buel in Monterey. The four-on-four adult tournament begins at 8:30 a.m., with the championship game scheduled for 3:30 p.m. (wrapping up by 4 p.m.). The event is free and open to the public, with a snow date of Sunday, January 29.
Sixteen mostly local, co-ed adult teams—96 skaters total—will compete on three rinks set up near the state boat ramp off Pixley Road (Route 183). The tournament was founded by Alex Regen, inspired by a chance conversation with neighbor and former pro hockey player James C. Burns, and made possible through collaboration with the Town of Monterey, longtime local hockey organizers, and community supporters.
Thanks to nine sponsors, teams play free of charge and all players receive jerseys. The Pass Dispensary serves as presenting sponsor, with support from Berkshire Bank, Great Barrington Bagel Company, Roberto’s Pizza (with a wood-fired pop-up), ExtraSpecialTeas.org, Classical Tents, Berkshire Magazine, and Barrington Brewery, which will also host post-tournament awards.
The Monterey Police Department will assist with traffic safety, and spectators are encouraged to attend and enjoy a day of winter hockey, food, and community. The event also honors the memory of Regen’s father, Bruce Regenstreich, who introduced him to hockey on Lake Buel decades ago.
